Stainless Steel Film Selection Guide – Natural Rubber vs Acrylic Protective Films
In the full workflow of stainless steel plate processing, transportation and storage, the selection of protective film directly determines the finished product yield and surface quality.
In the full workflow of stainless steel plate processing, transportation and storage, the selection of protective film directly determines the finished product yield and surface quality. Two mainstream options available for stainless steel substrates are natural rubber adhesive film and acrylic adhesive film. Many fabricators encounter residue, film rupture or shrinkage due to poor film selection, which raises rework costs. Distinguishing the performance and application boundaries of these two films is critical for stainless steel processors to improve quality and reduce expenses.
Industry process engineers note: There is no universal protective film for stainless steel. Only films matched to processing methods and surface finish deliver optimal results; generic films often lead to unnecessary losses.
The table below compares core performance parameters, covering applicable processes, temperature resistance and residue risk:
Comparison ItemNatural Rubber Protective FilmAcrylic Protective Film
Primary Application
Laser cutting, deep drawing, bending and heavy deformation
Plate storage, transportation, simple flat cutting
Elongation & Stretchability
Excellent, follows large substrate deformation
Limited, prone to tearing under heavy stretching
High-temperature Resistance
Stable under laser heat, low risk of adhesive burn
Softens at high temperature, edge adhesive residue likely
Peel Performance
Clean peel after hot or cold processing, no residue
Long-term lamination increases residue risk
Suitable Surface Finish
2B matte, HL brushed, 8K mirror stainless steel
Mainly for 2B matte stainless steel
The recommended usage scenarios are summarised below:
- Natural Rubber Protective Film: For stainless steel requiring secondary forming, including elevator decorative panels, kitchenware stamped parts and precision laser-cut components. These applications demand high elongation, heat stability and residue-free peeling.
- Acrylic Protective Film: For raw stainless steel sheets only requiring basic protection, indoor warehousing and short-distance transport. It delivers cost-effective surface guarding for non-forming applications.
Natural rubber films also feature good UV resistance for short-term outdoor stacking. Acrylic films degrade, yellow and delaminate under outdoor UV exposure and are only suitable for indoor storage. For manufacturers prioritising precision and low rework rates, natural rubber films are the preferred solution for high-end stainless steel fabrication.
To sum up, acrylic films work well for simple storage protection. For laser cutting, stamping and bending processes, natural rubber protective film is required to prevent surface defects and preserve the original appearance of stainless steel panels.
